Listening to Hear

By March 3, 2016Blog

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”  Stephen R. Covey

This morning’s devotion came from two different passages: James 1:19 and Proverbs 18:13

Listen in Love  James 1:19

“My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

Proverbs 18:13

“He who answers before listening- that is his folly and his shame.”

Listening Ears. There are many times in our daily lives that we are quick to do anything, but listen. I am reminded of how important these verses are as we do ministry in our own neighborhoods and in Belize. The simple questions make a huge impact. How we listen and how we engage is reflective of God. One of the simple most misused question is “How are you?”. This three-word sentence often is thrown around like a carefree wind. It is from this simple sentence, when we pay attention, that we make eternal impacts. If you have people in your life that listen well, they listen with the intent to hear. These people are pure jewels. Their care is deep, their sincerity is real, and their love is vast.

While we are in cities, towns, and villages, in Belize and at home, let’s not get caught up in the schedule but intently listen to needs of each person. To the cries of love, or adoration or telling personal stories, we listen, we process, we lean in. Through this we see God’s global love and adoration for His people. We see felt needs for others and for ourselves. When we listen, we begin to feel healing and restoration within our souls. When we communicate with God, and we listen to His voice in our lives, true inspiration happens.

Many thoughts and prayers,
