What is Really Included In a Mission Trip?

As you plan a mission trip for your church or school, mission trip cost matters. You’re asking families to invest their money, participants to give their time, and parents to entrust their children to your care.

After nearly 20 years of helping churches and schools serve on mission trips, I’ve learned that the most important question isn’t always, “What’s the cheapest trip?”

It’s “Who are we trusting with our people, and what kind of experience will they have?”

For me, that question is deeply personal.

Thirst Missions is a ministry that my family has poured our hearts and lives into since 2008, alongside wonderful friends and colleagues who share our calling.

Behind every trip are people who genuinely care about you. We spend countless hours planning, preparing, building relationships with local pastors, and working through details most participants will never see.

We sweat together, plan together, and we pray together.

When a church or school chooses Thirst Missions, they’re trusting us with their people, their resources, and an important opportunity for spiritual growth. That’s something I take seriously.

We’ve been blessed to serve more than 20,000 participants on over 1,000 mission trips. I’m grateful for that growth, but I never want Thirst Missions to become so large or focused on systems that we lose sight of the individuals God has entrusted to our care.

We are certainly not perfect, and things don’t always go according to plan, but we are always learning and improving. We care deeply about making every trip meaningful, well-led, and personally supported.

Our staff pray for the teams they serve. They learn names, listen to stories, encourage participants, and invest in the people God brings to us.

I want every group to experience that care, from their first conversation with us until they return home.

And that commitment shapes everything we do—from the food we prepare and the staff we hire to the local ministries we partner with and the conversations we have throughout the week.

When you are comparing mission trip prices for 2027, I encourage you to look beyond the advertised number.

Let me show you what I mean.

At Thirst Missions, all-inclusive means the essentials of your mission trip are already taken care of.

We’re talking about exceptional food, caring staff, coordinated ministry, spiritual leadership, planned recreation, and the countless details that make a mission trip meaningful.

Recently, we’ve heard from participants who returned from trips with lower-cost mission organizations feeling disappointed.

Some meals weren’t included and had to be purchased separately. They had to find their own places to shower. Their ministry locations had been scheduled, but much of the rest of the experience was left to their group.

There wasn’t a dedicated staff member accompanying them throughout the week. No one to help explain local customs, navigate cultural differences, or invest personally in their team. Some didn’t have a real person to speak with while planning their trip.

I don’t share these experiences to criticize other ministries. There are many wonderful organizations doing important work, and different ministries offer different levels of support.

But churches and schools deserve to understand those differences before registering.

There’s a big difference between having ministry opportunities arranged for your group and having an experienced ministry team walk alongside you from beginning to end.

That’s something we’ve worked hard to provide at Thirst Missions.

Having served as a youth pastor, I understand how much responsibility comes with leading a mission trip.

You’re recruiting participants, communicating with parents, raising funds, organizing travel, and preparing your group spiritually.

By the time your team arrives, you’ve already invested months of work.

The last thing you need is to spend the week figuring out where everyone will eat, where they’ll shower, who has the supplies for tomorrow’s project, or what to do when the schedule changes.

At Thirst Missions, we want to take those responsibilities off your shoulders.

We coordinate the accommodations, meals, ministry opportunities, project materials, staffing, and daily programming included in your package.

Our goal is to give you the freedom to spend your time with your people.

We take care of the details so you can focus on the people God has entrusted to you.

One of the most important parts of a successful mission trip happens long before anyone boards an airplane or climbs into a van.

It’s the planning.

When your church or school registers with Thirst Missions, you work with a real person who gets to know your group.

Our mission trip consultants help you consider ministry opportunities, accommodations, schedules, transportation, and the many details that go into preparing a team.

Have a question about food allergies? Sleeping arrangements? Local culture? Ministry activities? Recreation? What to pack?

We’re here to help.

You shouldn’t have to navigate everything through an automated registration system or wait until you arrive to find out how your trip will work.

We believe relationships matter, and those relationships begin before your mission trip.

Let’s talk about something that can make a tremendous difference in the quality of a mission trip.

The food!

If you’ve ever led a group of hungry teenagers after a long day of ministry, you know exactly what I mean.

At Thirst Missions, we take tremendous pride in our food and the wonderful cooks who prepare it. We believe meals should be one of the highlights of your mission trip, not something your group simply gets through.

Our goal is simple: Great food, plenty of it, and something for everyone.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • All-you-can-eat, buffet-style meals. Every meal is served buffet style, with plenty of food and the opportunity to go back for seconds—or thirds! Nobody should leave the table hungry.
  • A special local meal experience. Every trip includes a special meal featuring the local cuisine and flavors of your destination. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the culture through food.
  • Options for different preferences and allergies. We provide alternate meal choices to accommodate food preferences, dietary restrictions, and allergies communicated in advance.
  • Healthy choices at every meal. We make sure nutritious options are available alongside the other delicious food.
  • Everything included. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinking water are all part of your mission trip package.

And there’s something else that makes our meals special.

Our cooks are an important part of the Thirst Missions family.

They aren’t simply preparing food behind the scenes. They’re welcoming your group, sharing their culture, building relationships, and helping participants feel cared for.

Some of the best conversations and memories of a mission trip happen around the dinner table.

You shouldn’t have to worry about finding restaurants, coordinating meals for 30 people, or asking students to spend extra money on food they thought was included.

We’ve already taken care of it.

After a full day of serving, there’s something wonderful about coming back to a delicious, home-cooked meal, sitting down together, and enjoying time with your team.

We want you to eat well, eat plenty, and experience the hospitality of the communities you’re serving.

It’s one more way we try to make every participant feel genuinely cared for.

A mission trip isn’t a luxury vacation. We understand that.

That doesn’t mean your group shouldn’t have a clean, safe place to sleep, shower, and recharge.

At Thirst Missions, we arrange your accommodations in advance, based on the lodging package your group selects.

Depending on the destination, options may include floor-stay accommodations, dorms, retreat centers, guesthouses, or hotels.

We help you understand those choices ahead of time, including sleeping arrangements and facilities.

Your team shouldn’t finish a long day of ministry wondering where everyone is going to shower.

And your leaders shouldn’t have to figure out accommodations after arriving.

We want your participants rested, refreshed, and ready for another day of serving.

This is one of the most meaningful differences between simply booking a mission trip and experiencing one with Thirst Missions.

Our staff don’t just point you toward ministry locations and send you on your way.

They serve alongside your group throughout the trip, and get to know your participants. They learn names, listen to stories, answer questions, and help people feel comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.

Our staff understand the local communities, ministry partners, and cultural differences that make each destination unique.

They can explain why a particular ministry matters, help your group understand local customs, and provide insights that turn an ordinary experience into something much more meaningful.

And they become part of your team.

They laugh with your students, encourage them through challenges, pray with them, and help them process what they’re experiencing.

Our staff are there to lead, care, serve, and build relationships.

That personal attention isn’t an optional upgrade. It’s part of the Thirst Missions experience.

We believe mission trips should be about people first.

Construction projects matter. Vacation Bible School matters. Medical clinics matter. Food distributions matter.

Behind every project is a person, a family, a church, or a community.

We work alongside local pastors and ministry leaders who know their communities and understand their needs.

Your team might help repair a church, visit families, encourage elderly residents, lead children’s ministry, provide medical care, or serve in a local school.

But we want participants to understand more than what they’re doing.

We want them to understand why they’re serving.

Our staff help make those connections throughout the week, encouraging participants to listen, learn, build relationships, and share the love of Jesus Christ.

A completed project is wonderful.

But a local pastor encouraged, a family loved, or a student discovering a deeper understanding of serving Christ can have an impact that lasts far beyond the week.

Seeing Jesus in the People We Serve: How Christian Mission Trips Build Faith and Relationships

Some of my favorite moments on mission trips happen in the evening.

The work is finished. Everyone has eaten. The group gathers to talk about the day.

Sometimes those conversations are joyful. Sometimes they’re challenging.

A student may be wrestling with the poverty they’ve witnessed, or another participant may have experienced a meaningful conversation with a family. Someone else may be asking questions about faith, purpose, or God’s calling.

These moments matter.

That’s why our staff help lead intentional evening gatherings with Scripture, prayer, worship, and reflection.

We want participants to connect what they’re experiencing with what they believe.

We want them to grow in compassion, deepen their faith, and consider how God might be calling them to serve when they return home.

As a former youth pastor, I know how valuable those conversations can be.

A great mission trip shouldn’t just change what someone does for one week. It should influence how they live the other 51 weeks of the year.

We also believe there’s a place for fun, adventure, and experiencing the destination you’ve traveled to serve.

Whether it’s the mountains of Alaska, the Caribbean atmosphere of Belize and Puerto Rico, or the unique cultures of Nashville and New Orleans, these experiences can be wonderful opportunities to build relationships and create memories.

That’s why planned recreation and cultural experiences are included in our trip programming.

Some groups choose optional upgrades or additional activities, and we’re happy to help them explore those opportunities.

But you don’t have to purchase an upgrade to enjoy a complete mission trip.

Here’s what you can expect from our standard trip packages.

Before Your Mission Trip

  • Personal consultation and trip planning
  • A dedicated mission trip consultant
  • Promotional materials and preparation resources
  • Participant information and online trip resources
  • A coordinated ministry itinerary

During Your Mission Trip

  • Experienced, caring Thirst Missions staff
  • Local church and ministry partnerships
  • Coordinated ministry activities and project materials
  • Lodging and appropriate bathroom and shower facilities
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinking water
  • Devotional resources and evening spiritual programming
  • Cultural orientation and local insights
  • Included recreation and destination experiences
  • Participant T-shirt
  • On-the-ground transportation for private trips in Alaska, Belize, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico

What Costs Extra?

We believe in being clear about expenses before you register.

Travel to and from your destination, such as airfare, is separate from the advertised mission trip price.

Appalachia groups and Nashville and New Orleans Youth Collective groups arrange their own local transportation.

Optional upgraded accommodations, premium recreation activities, additional trip days, personal purchases, and applicable registration fees are also additional.

The important distinction is that you don’t need to purchase upgrades to have a complete mission trip experience.

Whether you’re considering Thirst Missions or another organization, I encourage you to ask these questions:

  1. Are breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinking water included?
  2. Where will our group sleep and shower? Are those arrangements already made?
  3. Will we have dedicated staff serving alongside us throughout the trip?
  4. Are we able to speak with a real person before registering, and throughout the planning process?
  5. Who coordinates ministry partners, projects, supplies, and the daily schedule?
  6. Are devotionals, evening gatherings, and spiritual reflection included?
  7. What additional expenses should we expect beyond the advertised price?

The answers will help you understand the experience you’re choosing and the total cost to your group.

All for the glory of God and the proclamation of Jesus Christ.
